Speak was an entry for a small cross-university game jam that I helped run as part of my role as a Women In Games Ambassador, based on the theme ‘breaking barriers’. It won Best Design and was featured in the University of Portsmouth Graduate Showcase.
As the player collects more tokens, their speed increases, but more and more voices come in over the player character’s voice. The idea behind this was to represent how even when women do speak up about their experiences, it is often met with a lot of backlash or over defensiveness, which can lead to their original point being drowned out. Over time the game becomes very fast and the sound effects feel overpowering, and the soundtrack is designed to reflect this anxiousness shown in the gameplay.
Soundtrack by Ashley Keep.
